Australia 108, Melbourne
The tallest building in the southern hemisphere, Australia 108 is a new residential development in Melbourne by Brookfield Multiplex. Rickard Engineering was the façade engineer to Minesco who supplied the aluminium and glass curtain wall.
The curved geometry of the façade and large displacement of the building meant it was essential for special considerations to be made with regard to façade/building movements and the interaction between the two.
The “Star Burst” design between Levels 69 and 72 was highly complicated and is constructed with aluminium panels and glazing panels installed on trusses.
Key Technical Details from the Article:
- Truss Support: The Star Burst is installed on 350 tonnes of steel (16m x 3m trusses).
- Inspection: These trusses were specifically inspected by the Rickard Engineering team between March and May 2019.
- Installation: Erection of the gold-coloured aluminium panels commenced in May 2019.
- Curtain Wall: In addition to the Star Burst, the firm provided the design and certification for the main aluminium and glass curtain wall for the tower.
The article in Create Magazine (August 2021) highlights the collaboration between the structural frame movement and the intricate design of the facade, ensuring the “Big Thing” of Melbourne’s skyline remains structurally sound against the high wind speeds at that altitude.
